Lava cave Front entrance cave made from over-fired clay
A ‘kiln accident’ inspired us to create this cave variant: the automatic switch-off did not work and the kiln fired longer and higher than intended.
The result: total damage to the kiln, caves with bubbles, and, depending on the type of clay, melted caves. The black clay ran over the stacking plates like lava and caused the entire stacked tower to topple.
What could still be used as a cave had a fantastically textured surface, smooth yet full of bubbles and small fireclay bricks covered in clay. Our catfish took to it immediately 🙂 . The surface texture is so much more natural than a smooth wall that these caves have become the absolute favorites in our system.
However, we didn’t want to sacrifice another kiln, so we experimented a little with heat and clay. The result is caves that are almost 100 % identical to those of the “accident”. So more catfish can enjoy the pleasure of moving into such a comfortable home 😉
In the aforementioned accident, most of the stacked caves were fused together. We also tried this when experimenting and it worked. Randomly stacked caves for testing are firmly fused together and can be used as a stack.
